At the time of installation of Tally.ERP9 Software we have learnt about advance configuration in our previous post. During Installation Tally Software ask us about were we want our data to be located and if not selected by default Tally software places our data in Tally.ERP9 folder were it is installed.

example :- if during installation we have selected Tally software to install in D:\Tally.ERP9 drive then Tally Software will place Data in D:\Tally.ERP9\Data (if Not changed in advance settings)

Tally Data path

You can specify another location if you desire so and have different location for Data folder and Tally.ERP9 Software folder.

For example D:\Data
To perform this you should change the data path as D:\Data

When you create a new company with Tally software, will create a sub folder in Data’s folder with a system generated code starting from 10000 where all data file of the company is stored

Tally Data Folder

Each system generated folder represents respective company. And same number can also be seen on company selection screen after you open Tally Software. So by this you come to know which number represents which company.

Change the data folder after installation

There are two option to change data folder after installation

  1. Go to configuration screen by pressing F12 from Gateway of Tally select Data configuration. On data configuration Screen type the location of data folder where you want your data to get storedData Configuration ScreenAccept and save the screen. This option is not available for earlier versions in Tally.ERP9.
  2. The Second option is to Go to Tally program folder. If you don’t know where it is located Right click on the Tally Icon from the desktop and from the pop up click on properties then click on find target or Open location the Tally Program folder will open. Find tally.ini  file and open it in wordpad.

Find the following words

;;Specify location of Data files

Data=C:\Tally.ERP9\Data

change it to the location you want to store data for example

;;Specify location of Data files

Data=D:\Data

Very important: – After changing the file location using above two methods, you must copy the “Data” folder from C:\Tally.ERP9\   to    D:\

It is always recommended to take a copy of the Data folder for back up purposes apart from tally generated back up file.
